In December 2015 Bangladesh was the first country to hold the first ever International Conference on Disability and Disaster Risk Management (DRM), in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (SFDRR).
The conference was attended by over 400 participants from different 18 countries, with nearly 25% of the participants being persons with disabilities. This was a great opportunity to share experiences and knowledge on disability inclusive DRM. The outcome document of the first conference was the Dhaka Declaration on Disability and DRM.
The Bangladesh Government hosted the Second International Conference on Disability and Disaster Risk Management in Dhaka from May 15 to May 17, 2018. Nearly 3,000 representatives, including 112 world renowned experts from 34 countries, attended the three-day conference that was designed with five plenary sessions, 14 sideline events and four special events under the theme of ‘Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Management – Today and Tomorrow’. Participants included policy makers, practitioners, academics, researchers, students, members of Government, Local Government, UN agencies, NGOs, DPOs, Private Sector and other relevant institutions.
Our team attended the conference and many visitors visited the Academy’s stall and registered for our e-learning platform Kaya.
It is expected that the conference will be a milestone on implementing the principles of the ‘United Nations Convention on the Rights of Person with Disabilities (UNCRPD)‘ to ensure the participation, inclusion and leadership of person with disabilities within all disaster risk management programs.
The conference also put emphasis on knowledge sharing on disability and disaster risk management in the international arena, data collection and increasing research and engaging the private sector. Twenty countries around the world will work for creating congenial atmosphere for persons with disabilities after any disaster by 2021, in line with the Dhaka declaration. It is also hoped that the shared knowledge and information of the conference will help all stakeholders to enrich their knowledge and practices on disability inclusive disaster risk management.
