Disaster risk reduction
The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction in collaboration with Give2Asia and Habitat for Humanity-India with support from the Humanitarian Leadership Academy organised the “Promoting Local Innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) in India” workshop last April 10, 2017 at the Vidyadeep College, Bangalore, India.
Some 30 local NGOs working on disaster risk reduction (DRR), response and recovery in south India came and shared their successes and challenges in responding to the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, and the major flooding disasters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. They discussed how each organisation can work together effectively during disaster events and how they can improve the quality of their programs. The workshop aimed to: surface good practices in DRR in India; identify areas for capacity development to strengthen the quality of local DRRM programs in the country; and discuss possible areas of collaboration and partnership work in India.
