Humanitarian Leadership Academy merges with Save the Children UK
Today (19 March 2019) the Humanitarian Leadership Academy announces its plan to merge with Save the Children UK. This merger secures the future of the Academy and enables it to become more sustainable and impactful.
Save the Children UK set up the Academy in response to the need for disaster prone countries to build local capabilities for emergency responses. Communities needed to know how to respond to a disaster in the first few hours, before help arrives.
Since its inception in 2015, the Academy has built a network of partners, globally, with a mandate to work with communities, ensuring they are ready to prepare for, and respond to, crisis situations.
Humanitarian Leadership Academy, Chief Executive, Saba Al Mubaslat, said:
“The merger with Save the Children UK is the next phase in our journey. It secures our future, and will help us to gain strength, reach more people and save more lives. In our three years of existence, we have reached more than 100,000 people in 190 countries.
“There is still a big job to be done; that humanitarian learning is brought to local communities and that we, in turn, learn from local people and their experiences.”
The Academy provides learning through its digital platform – Kaya – a one-stop shop providing free materials. It also provides paid-for services using its expertise in organisational learning and development to help others create their own digital platforms, develop their learning strategies and capabilities, and work with private sector organisations. In turn, the private sector can train staff as volunteers in emergency responses and plan for disasters.
Last year, the Academy’s turnover was £5.9m GBP. It employs 17 staff in London. The merger will happen on 30 April 2019.
