As we conclude an inspiring 20-month Education in Emergencies (EiE) Fundamentals training initiative in Ukraine, we reflect on the learning journey, collective successes and impact.
The Education in Emergencies Fundamentals training journey began in August 2023 with a workshop in Kyiv. We brought together 25 Education Cluster members to reflect on the EiE response, and identified key challenges and learning to consider how this could be developed into a tailored EiE Fundamentals training package for Ukraine.
The programme was developed with the active engagement of the cohort of participants, who in turn went on to deliver their own training sessions – a strong example of capacity sharing in action.
The initiative was delivered in a range of formats, which involved the piloting of online and in-person training modules, co-designing a Ukrainian-language EiE package, and the launch of sub-national trainings in Lviv, Dnipro, Odesa, and Kyiv.
Strong contextualisation and collaboration have underpinned this initiative, leading to strengthened relationships and increased technical expertise.

Reflecting at the conclusion of this initiative, Casey Pearson, Technical Learning Specialist and EiE Lead said:
“This initiative really showcases that when you position actors closest to the response as co-designers and co-facilitators of the training, rather than just participants, it totally shifts the ownership and sustainability of a training. This approach has really enabled Education Cluster members to adapt and develop the EiE Fundamentals training package to truly reflect the needs and priorities of those working on the response. Huge credit to their hard work and commitment to this initiative.“
Watch the video below to hear some participants reflect on their experiences – and how this training initiative is amplifying the impact of their work across Ukraine together with partners.
With appreciation and thanks to the Education Cluster and all facilitators who made this possible. This initiative was funded by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).

I think this is the most exciting programme I have been taking part in for capacity development. I think the best part about it is that it is very bottom up so it’s very participatory and the actual practitioners in the field – from our cluster team, local partners and from some INGOs.
