Strength in solidarity: women humanitarian leaders connect to navigate challenges and change

The first cohort of the Women in Leadership – Navigating Turbulent Times course has successfully concluded with participants reporting increased confidence levels.

Bringing together women leaders from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Türkiye, representing international and local NGOs, the six-session online programme was designed with peer coaching in mind.

The programme is a new initiative delivered by Coach Mentoring Ltd in partnership with the HLA. Its aim is to equip women leaders in the humanitarian and development sectors with practical tools for adaptive leadership, emotional intelligence, and fostering resilience in complex humanitarian settings.

Despite the challenges of navigating uncertain contexts, eight participants graduated, having actively engaged in sessions and shared valuable reflections. Participants expressed appreciation for the programme’s supportive, reflective space and the opportunity to connect with other women facing similar challenges.

The diverse cohort highlighted the value of peer coaching, the richness of diverse perspectives, and the practical application of adaptive leadership techniques.

Participants praised this supportive initiative and reported renewed confidence in their leadership capabilities:

“What I enjoyed most was the open and supportive environment. It felt like a space where I could pause, reflect, and hear from others navigating uncertainty.”

“Meeting women from different countries with diverse backgrounds made the journey rich and insightful.”

“Resilient leadership is grounded in purpose, emotional intelligence, and adaptability. Staying connected to my ‘why’ is critical in high-pressure contexts.”

Lydia Sparrow, Senior Consultant at Coach Mentoring said:

“This programme has been a powerful reminder of the strength of these women that comes from shared learning and community support. We look forward to witnessing how these incredible women continue to thrive and inspire others in their leadership journeys.”

With three more cohorts currently underway, the programme continues to provide a vital platform for women leaders to connect, learn, and strengthen their impact in the humanitarian sector.
