Humanitarian learning in practice: sharing insights with University of Derby students

This week Esther Grieder, the HLA’s Global Communities and Partnerships Lead, was delighted to meet with a group of staff and postgraduate students at the University of Derby School of Law and Social Sciences to share insights into the work and learning opportunities provided by the HLA.

The visit was hosted by Dr Dolapo Fakuade – Programme Director MSc in Intelligence, Security and Disaster Management – who also recently attended the HLA’s Humanitarian Xchange in London, which she described as a ‘remarkable event with passionate people in the field’.

Esther presented to the students who are undertaking a module on Disaster and Humanitarian Aid Response, as part of the MSc in Intelligence, Security and Disaster Management programme.

The cohort’s learning focus this week has been the professionalisation of humanitarian work and Esther’s talk illustrated this by sharing examples and stories of the HLA’s capacity strengthening work and learning products and services to meet the needs of affected communities.

Reflecting on the visit, Esther said:

“It was great to have the opportunity to meet students from all over the world, with a range of humanitarian backgrounds and interests, and hear their views on what’s important in the field of humanitarian learning.”

Esther and the HLA extends thanks to Dr Dolapo Fakuade and students at the University of Derby.
